The Janaki Mandir — popularly called the Nau Lakha Mandir — is the spiritual, cultural, and architectural heart of Janakpur. Dedicated to Goddess Sita (Janaki), it is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in all of South Asia. Here is everything you need to know before your visit.
History
The temple's story begins in the 17th century, when a saint named Shurkishordas discovered a golden idol of Goddess Sita buried at this site. Shurkishordas is considered the founder of modern Janakpur — he established a centre of Sita worship and attracted devotees from across the Mithila region.
The grand structure we see today was commissioned by Queen Vrisha Bhanu of Tikamgarh (Madhya Pradesh, India) and completed in 1910 AD. The construction reportedly cost 900,000 silver coins — hence the popular nickname 'Nau Lakha Mandir' (Temple of Nine Lakhs).
A remarkable detail: a small mosque exists within the temple premises, built for the Muslim craftsmen and labourers who participated in the construction. It stands as a historic symbol of communal harmony.
Architecture
The temple is a massive three-storey structure standing 50 metres high, covering an area of 4,860 square feet. Built entirely of stone and marble, its architecture is a rare and beautiful fusion of Koiri Hindu and Rajput palace design with Mughal domes, arches, and minarets. The brilliant white facade is punctuated by intricate lattice windows, delicate turrets, and colourful glass. The complex contains 60 rooms, each decorated with engravings, sculptures, and vivid wall paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana.
Temple Timings
The temple is open every day of the year. The general darshan timings are:
- Morning Session: 5:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Mangala Aarti is performed at dawn)
- Evening Session: 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Sandhya Aarti at sunset is the most atmospheric)
Note: timings may vary slightly during major festivals (Vivah Panchami, Ram Navami). The temple can get extremely crowded during these events, so arrive early to secure a spot near the sanctum.
What to Expect During Aarti
The evening Sandhya Aarti is the most popular time to visit. As the sun sets, the entire temple is illuminated with strings of colourful lights. Priests perform elaborate rituals with oil lamps, incense, and flowers while devotional chanting fills the air. The combination of white marble glowing under coloured lights and the sound of bells creates a truly transcendent atmosphere.
Insider tip: the ten minutes before the evening Sandhya Aarti begins are best for photographs — the temple lights are on, the sky still holds some colour, and the courtyard hasn't filled up yet.
Tips for Visitors
- Dress Modestly: Both men and women should cover shoulders and knees. Avoid shorts, sleeveless tops, and revealing clothing.
- Remove Footwear: Shoes must be removed before entering. Dedicated shoe-keeping areas are available at the entrance gates.
- Photography: Photographs and videos are freely allowed in the outer courtyard — and the architecture is spectacular, so take your time. However, photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum (Garbhagriha) where the main idols are housed.
- Offerings: You can purchase flowers, prasad packets, and coconuts from the many vendors near the entrance.
- Stay Nearby: To attend the pre-dawn Mangala Aarti without stress, stay at a hotel within walking distance. Hotel Ramayan is directly across the street from the main gates.
Entry Fee
There is no entry fee to visit the Janaki Mandir. It is open to people of all faiths and nationalities.
